Vaca Muerta glossary
Exploitation concession
The title that allows a company to produce oil and gas in an area for a term set by law.
The exploitation concession is the title that allows production. Law 17,319, amended by Law 27,007 of 2014, created the non-conventional exploitation concession used in Vaca Muerta: it lasts 35 years and includes a pilot period of up to five years.
The holder pays royalties on production and a yearly fee (canon) per square kilometer. The concession can be extended, with an additional royalty set by the law.
Why it matters to landowners and companies
A non-conventional concession over a piece of land means decades of activity: new wells, pipelines, roads.
